The Humanistics story

The Humanistics story began in March 1999, at a time when organisations were spending £millions on new processes and technologies whilst at the same time reducing their people development budget

The spark was Elaina Smith, a well known leadership development consultant and executive coach. Elaina took her passion for designing, implementing and embedding high impact, deeply personal development journeys for leaders and coaches, and infused this with Humanistic principles of mutual respect, trust and personal responsibility to launch Humanistics

  • 1999

    Humanistics is launched!

  • 1999-2001

    We secure our very first client, Shell UK, and begin work immediately designing and implementing their customer service and sales training programmes. We work alongside their Training Manager John Hay, who’s both challenging and supportive in equal measure – we learned so much together and although John is now retired, he continues to be a dear and treasured friend

  • 2000-2005

    We forge a wonderful professional alliance with Ray and Charlie Martin at First Place Consulting. On their behalf, we run numerous performance and sales improvement programmes for their clients Zurich Financial Services, Abbey National, Ventura, WestLB and Ademco Microtech to name but a few

  • 2001-2002

    We become associates to our friends at Customer Consulting Ltd and head up the communication strand of a large scale culture change programme with Aer Lingus – great experience of being part of this huge collaborative project and living and working in the vibrant fair city of Dublin

  • 2004

    After a frustrating struggle to find reliable telephone training equipment to use in our training courses, Sam decides to build his own! The new innovative kit is originally intended only for us but clients love it so much, Sam decides to offer it as a product and so H2, a new baby business is born!

  • 2006-2008

    We join forces with our friends at Minerva Consultancy and deliver for them a series of programmes for Britannia Building Society – fantastic people and probably one of the nicest organisations you could possibly hope to work with

  • 2007

    We design, and our fab associate William Galton delivers, our first public sector training programme for Dumfries and Galloway District Council – lovely project in this beautiful Scottish location

  • 2006-2012

    Our dear friend and associate Susan Dodson is working in Barclays Bank and needs help! We combine forces and begin our long and wonderful relationship with Barclays. Our first task is to design and implement a leadership programme within the Direct Channels division, followed by a large scale coaching programme for managers – 550 managers trained in UK and India and the most fantastic performance uplift achieved – this project is undoubtedly a career highlight for both Susan and ourselves

  • 2012

    Word gets out about the results of the Barclays coaching programmes and British Gas invite us to do the same for them! Another great opportunity to work with a fantastic group of dedicated managers

    Elaina becomes accredited with the Association for Coaching and our executive coaching proposition really starts to really take off

  • 2013-2015

    Hello Auntie Beeb! The BBC invite us to design and deliver a workshop aimed at building effective relationships. It’s an opportunity to use much of or expertise in Transactional Analysis. The workshop forms part of the BBC’s learning curriculum – we love running this workshop and the delegates love participating. We hear that there’s a 6-month waiting list to attend!

    One of the most memorable events this year is being asked to run the workshop for high talented potential leaders with disabilities. What a wonderful and privileged opportunity. It’s the first time we run a workshop accompanied by Sign language experts and Guide dogs! A fantastic series of workshops with an inspirational group of talented professionals

    Lights, Cameras, Action! We deliver our first Video Adviser training Programme for Barclays, and who better to support us than BBC’s Loose Women presenter, Jackie Brambles. Jackie shares her expert knowledge of presenting and camera techniques. Her make-up specialists wows the team with her stories and transforms our team into small screen superstars!

    Executive Coaching and top team facilitation become key themes for this year as we support senior leaders in Barclays, Capita, TheCityUK and Carole Nash

    Our Transactional Analysis training brings us into contact with new, like-minded people from across Europe who are as passionate about people as we are. So when we were invited to form a community of practice with a group of consultants from Studio Cometis, Milan we jumped at the chance. In no time we are working together in Italy and Russia – woohoo!

    Perhaps the most inspiring thing to come out of this new alliance has been participating in an innovative workshop exploring business communication and relationships through the metaphor of Argentinian Tango – an absolutely sublime experience – would love to bring this to the UK… whose up for it?

    After 2 years, 125 hours of coaching, a 29000-word assignment, several ‘throw teddy out of pram’ moments and one very patient and encouraging mentor – Elaina finally achieves ILM level 7 Accreditation in Leadership Mentoring and Executive Coaching

    When our old friend Helen Chilvers, from Clarity (old = longstanding, not age), invites us to support her with development programmes for her clients, we are thrilled! Not only is it a joy to work with Helen but the project is international, so we have the pleasure of running multi – cultural workshops in Prague and Dubai – how cool is that?

    Elaina begins writing a book on humanistic management… this could take a while…

    Sam leaves Humanistics to pursue his passion for creative multi media design – we wish him every success in his new venture

    Dubai, Milan, Madrid and Wales are just a few of the places we’ve worked in this year. We’re loving what we’re creating together in new cities and across cultures – great to see what unites us all and transcends cultural barriers!!!

    Time for a refresh! We’re Spring cleaning Humanistics with a fresh look at what we do, and how we describe what we do. The new website is a great catalyst for sharpening our focus and helping us reconnect with what we love about our work (plus having a giggle at some of our old team pics that we’ve found in the cupboard). – We may have a few more wrinkles now but our passion remains the same!
